- The proposed State of Nevada motor pool will not go west of Swenson
as previously indicated. New
construction will require the county to receive current market
price/rates that make the project too costly. The university is pursuing other options.
- The Old Paradise Elementary School site is now being referred to as
the Paradise Campus. It
currently houses educational outreach, campus security, and has the
potential to accommodate other stand-alone functions or to provide
surge space for building renovations on campus.
- The UNLV campus witnessed a 9% enrollment growth this year.
This unprecedented growth uncovered several major planning
issues: quality, size,
and cost. The university
is wrestling with each of these.
- Closing Brussels Street is still a concern to the Church of Latter
Day Saints and the Interfaith Council representatives.
Ultimately, the Master Plan would like to see the two parking
lots connected by one access point (requiring a mutual easement and
modifications to the existing brick wall); it is likely the road will
stay in its present location for some time.
Another opportunity may allow these facilities to occupy
parking spaces within the proposed parking deck south of the UNLV
Bookstore. This would
allow their sites to be utilized for other purposes such as building
expansion or outdoor recreation.
- The access road to Swenson near the Gaming Institute (hospitality
campus) needs to be restudied. The
committee felt it should remain in the plan. Traffic issues on
Claymont (very heavy volume at peak times) were cited as reasons to
maintain this vehicular connection.
This road could provide adequate relief, assuming vehicular
stacking on Swenson Street would not back up from the Flamingo
intersection and prohibit egress.
Regarding the Shadow Lane Campus, the following notes
were recorded:
- The university should consider transit service rather than just
providing surface parking. The
campus is well served by transit today.
Service to this site and area could be enhanced by the Regional
Transportation Commission (RTC) bus routes. The RTC would like to further discuss these
opportunities with university representatives.
- Access from the east side of the campus is necessary and should be
studied closely as the NDOT interchange and I-15 modifications become
finalized.
- The intersection of West Charleston and Shadow Lane is already a
"problem" at peak times. The
location of the proposed parking deck (SE quadrant) will need to
carefully consider existing traffic issues to avoid additional
problems with parking offloading.
- Building A will likely be occupied by the UNLV School of Dentistry.
Building B will provide an additional 20,000 SF for the School
of Dentistry and house the UNLV Cancer Center and biomedical tech
research. Building C will
house support services and safety.
