- Should growth drive the funding (Nevada funding model) or should
dollars drive the growth (new model)?
Does the space available for the students cap the enrollment?
Considerable discussion ensued and no specific resolution was
reached. It was agreed
that this is a very significant issue for the university to resolve.
- The consultant team was directed to remove the tennis facility from
the top level of the proposed parking structure along Harmon Road.
Wind, noise, and recruiting issues were cited as potentially
detrimental to UNLV's tennis program.
It was agreed that a parking structure is needed in this
quadrant of campus. SmithGroup
JJR to determine alternative locations for these facilities.
- It was agreed that the Frazier Mall concept is solid.
SmithGroup JJR will continue to show Frazier Hall as a
demolition candidate.
- UCLA is UNLV's benchmark (academic, physical, etc.).
- It was agreed that the UNLV land acquisition fund needs to be
increased. This fund is
three years old. Considerable
discussion occurred about potential strategies and opportunities.
- It was agreed that the long-term land use of the Old Paradise
Elementary School site should be carefully considered.
University representatives expressed concern about having
students crossing Tropicana Avenue.
- SmithGroup JJR was directed to adjust the monorail alignment to
preserve the apartment complex at Harmon / Tarkanian.
The route will be moved north on Harmon and east on Tarkanian.
It was also verified that a 150' minimum radius is needed for
the fixed-guideway system.
- Additional discussion determined that UNLV will need to fund a
portion of the monorail / station through campus by 2003.
University representatives and the consultant team were
directed to investigate the details of the required funding.
- Can a "stand alone" monorail station be designed and built to
later accept a parking structure?
The consultant team indicated that this is possible and very
likely.
- UNLV representatives explored potential opportunities for utilizing
the proposed Thomas & Mack parking deck (north) for alternative
users. No resolution was
reached.
