The Preliminary Framework
Plan provides an overarching organizational strategy for the UNLV campus.
It is derived from established university goals, assessment of
existing campus conditions, and exploration of alternative organizational
concepts. As such, it serves
as an outline for more detailed planning and design of the campus'
interrelated systems including buildings, open space, circulation, and
utilities.
The
Preliminary Framework Plan for UNLV is built around four main premises:
1.
Establish a strong central core anchored by the library, academic
buildings, and a traditional open space quadrangle.
2.
Establish a strong organizational pattern knit together by a simple
system of open spaces and circulation corridors that build off the
existing malls and activity nodes.
3.
Establish four strong entrances with appropriate identity and
signage along Swenson Street, Tropicana Avenue, Maryland Parkway, and
Flamingo Avenue.
4.
Provide vehicular access from signalized intersections with
convenient access to parking facilities.
The
following is a description of each system's major attributes:
Buildings
1.
Organize future building zones and campus growth around the library.
2.
Recognize and reinforce the pedestrian circulation system.
3.
Expand on-campus student housing along Tropicana Avenue.
Open
Space
1.
Expand the existing "L" shaped malls to establish a primary
open space network.
2.
Improve the campus' "curb appeal" by bringing quality open
space to the campus edges.
3.
Maintain existing and create new spaces of various sizes and
character to support a variety of uses including recreation, active
gathering, and individual contemplation.
Circulation
1.
Strengthen the pedestrian friendly academic core through a
hierarchy of dedicated corridors and minimal vehicular conflicts.
2.
Establish major vehicular entrances at existing signalized
intersections that provide convenient access to parking facilities.
3.
Enable pedestrian movement from parking facilities into campus with
minimal vehicular conflicts.
4.
Distribute parking supply to support campus population centers.
Utility
Services
1.
Combine individual utility distribution lines into consolidated
corridors.
2.
Revamp the electrical system to provide reliable and redundant
service necessary for research program growth.
