The Consensus Concept
represents the input received during campus visit #3 and discussions with
the Campus Advisory, Community Advisory, and Overview Committees. It is a
compilation of elements from each Alternative Framework Plan that the
committees deemed desirable for combining into a singular approach for
organizing the physical campus. The Consensus Concept will undergo further
refinement and committee review during campus visit #4 in May. At that
time, a final Development Framework Plan will be crafted to guide future,
more detailed campus design during Phase 2 of the master planning process.
Organize
the campus around a series of neighborhood activity nodes
interconnected by a strong pedestrian and open space system (similar
to the principles inherent in the current master plan).
Develop
a strong central open space quadrangle adjacent to the Lied Library
surrounded by a mix of university facilities that facilitate campus
interaction.
Push
open space to the campus edges in order to strengthen institutional
identity.Remove Maude
Frazier Hall and develop a signature open space at the campus' main
entrance with the Lied Library as a visual terminus.
Reserve
land adjacent to the library for future academic/research needs.
Establish
strong open space and pedestrian linkages to the expanding residential
and academic neighborhoods to the south and north, respectively.
Develop
a secondary student union/activity center within the expanding
academic neighborhood to the north and west, possibly in conjunction
with renovation/expansion of the Paul McDermott Physical Education
Building.
Establish
three external loop roads to provide efficient vehicular access from
the surrounding public street system to campus parking decks.
Partner
in the investment to establish a strong mixed-use development along
Maryland Parkway across from the campus' main entrance.Consider development that will facilitate a pedestrian bridge.
